Fire and Timp Points

Details:

A visit to Grand Canyon often means stopping at paved overlooks with many other visitors. For those willing to get off the beaten path, a world of beauty awaits along Grand Canyon's remote North Rim. Two spectacular overlooks are at Fire and Timp Points. Both are reached via Forest Service gravel roads accessible with a high clearance passenger car in good weather. Some areas are more suitable to four-wheel drive in wet conditions. The last mile to Fire Point is rutted and not well maintained, so use caution. The reward is an expansive view of the Esplanade deep within the Canyon and breathtaking sunsets. For those who want to spend a night under the stars, at large camping is available in the Kaibab Forest. Camping within Grand Canyon boundaries requires a permit.

The best place to begin a visit to these two points is a stop at the Forest Service Visitor Center in either Jacob Lake or Fredonia. Maps and updated road conditions are a must. Remember that these are remote areas with no services, so go prepared and be sure to "leave no trace" of your visit. Both viewpoints are within Grand Canyon National Park boundaries, so park entry fee of $30 per car is applicable.
