Glen Canyon Dam and Carl Hayden Visitor Center

Details:

Glen Canyon Dam was constructed on the Colorado River beginning in 1956 and was completed ten years later. The concrete arch dam forms spectacular Lake Powell, provides water storage and generates hydroelectric power for the surrounding region. Carl Hayden Visitor Center is perched above the dam with panoramic views of the massive structure and Lake Powell. Exhibits tell the story of the dam and a relief map of the lake and Colorado River gives visitors an overview of the entire area.

Tours of the dam area available daily (except major holidays) at scheduled times so visitors can experience the inner workings of the power plant and dam. The facility is a secured area so be sure to follow regulations. Purses, backpacks, food and weapons are among the items not allowed. You may, however, carry a wallet and clear water bottle. These measures are worth the effort to see Glen Canyon Dam up close.
