Nankoweap Trail

Details:

The Nankoweap Trail was once known as the Horse Thief Trail where rustlers could drive stolen horses across the canyon to be sold elsewhere. This wilderness trail begins on the North Rim and is considered one of the most difficult hikes in the Grand Canyon. There are many hazards along the way including very exposed sections with loose footing. Hikers who have a fear of heights would do well to choose a different trail! The trailhead is located along Forest Service Road 610 which is about five miles north of the North Rim entrance station. Upon arriving at the small parking area, hike uphill before beginning the marked descent into the canyon. The pay off for this difficult hike is fabulous panoramic views but you'll need to stop to enjoy them since the trail will require much concentration along the way.

After raeching Marion Point, the trail continues downhill through the Supai Formation and on to Nankoweap Canyon. Though campsites are available along Nankoweap Creek, be mindful of the possibility of flash floods. The drainage continues to the Colorado River. Remember to obtain the appropriate hiking permits along with trail conditions from the Grand Canyon Backcountry Office.
