Sonoita Creek State Natural Area


The Sonoita Creek State Natural Area was established in 1994 to protect the fragile and scenic riparian habitat of Sonoita Creek and the surrounding area. This spectacular spot has a wide array of wildlife, varied habitat, history and solitude. The area is particularly popular for bidrwatching since it is on a migratory path. Birders may find up to 300 species of birds during the year including colorful vermilion flycatchers, kingfishers, violet-crowned hummingbirds, hawks and various waterfowl including the black-bellied whistling duck.  
Nature hikes and tours are available at the park for a small fee through the Friends of Sonoita Creek. Visitors must pay fees at the Patagonia Lake State Park entrance station. Fees are $10-15 per vehicle (up to 4 adults) or $3 per individual/bicycle.
