Zane Grey Cabin

Details:

Novelist, Zane Grey, fell in love with Arizona during a visit to Grand Canyon. He later built a cabin on the Mogollon Rim near Payson and spent several weeks a year at this hideaway. In 1929, Grey returned with a Hollywood crew to film a documentary about bear hunting. Unfortunately, he missed bear season and officials refused to bend the rules to accommodate the film. As a result, the author never returned to the state.

Over the years, Grey's cabin fell into disrepair but a Phoenix businessman restored the cabin in the 1960s and opened it to the public as a museum. In 1990, the Dude Fire destroyed the historic building. The Zane Grey Cabin Foundation raised funds to build a replica of the cabin and in 2003, the project was completed. The replica cabin/museum is located in Payson, about 25 miles from the original site.
