Grand Canyon\'s Hermit Trail offers hikers great views as well as interesting history. The trail begins near Hermits Rest at the end of the Hermit Road. Hikers can take the free shuttle to access the trail. The beginning is a steep descent, dropping almost 2,000 feet in the first 2.5 miles. Be sure to take time to search for fossils in the Coconino formation (a good excuse to rest.) At 1.2 miles, the Waldron Trail branches off to the left while Hermit bears right and drops into Hermit Creek gorge. Santa Maria Springs offers a brief respite and perhaps a trickle of water. Beyond Santa Maria Springs, the trail varies between long gradual declines and short, steep drops as well as sections of rock fall. Upon reaching the Cathedral Stairs, hikers are faced with rocky switchbacks that seem to go on forever and eventually lead to an intersection with the Tonto Trail. Continue west to Hermit Creek and campsites. Plan some time to go down to the Colorado River and Hermit Rapids another 1.5 miles away. An interesting bit of history is that Hermit Creek was the site of a Santa Fe Railroad venture to build a trail and camp for visitors to experience the canyon. It was constructed in 1911 and included a tramway to the luxury campsite and a chef to prepare meals. The venture predated Phantom Ranch and operated until 1930. Upon leaving Hermit Creek, hikers can opt to connect with the Tonto Trail and loop to Monument Creek and eventually out via Indian Gardens or return via Hermit Trail. Remember that this is a wilderness hike. Be prepared with everything needed for the journey. Water is available at Hermit Creek at the Colorado River but must be purified. Be sure to secure the necessary permits for this hike well in advance and get updated trail conditions and water source information from the Backcountry Office at Grand Canyon.
